What We've Learned From... Supernatural

For the last ten years, the Winchester brothers have taught me about monsters, magic and madness.  I've laughed with them in their triumph and cried for them at the end of each season when someone dies (the Winchesters always return somehow so it's okay). To sum up... I love them a lot. But what could the Winchesters teach us about social media?

Don’t Trust The Angels

Lots of people will claim to hold the key to the perfect social media strategy. Truth is, there isn't one… Yes, there are some feeds which seem to have social media down, but that doesn't mean that their content will work for you. Spend some time thinking about what you want your brand to say online.

I’ll Just Wait Here Then…

Now, social media is normally the first port of call for people to go to for help. Scheduling content first thing on a Monday morning and then ignoring your feeds for the rest of the week tells your followers you're not interested in hearing from them. That’s not to say you have to be on call 24/7, but set aside a few minutes a few times a day to make sure your followers know they can talk to you if they want to.

Where’s the Pie?

You know that you need to regularly post content, but where’s the pie? In this case, pie is a metaphor for your special something. What sets you apart from everyone else fighting to be heard on social media, why should people pay attention to you over them? Show them who you are and have fun with it! At the same time however, always keep it in the back of your mind that you are a business. Which brings us onto our next point...

Idjits....

While you want to show the world who you are through social media and have fun with your followers, there is still some social media etiquette that should be followed. You are a business therefore posting offensive or inappropriate material is a big no no. Some of the biggest brands (and politicians ahem...) in the world have been hit with social media blunders at one point or another so try to stay on target with the message you want to send to your followers. You can read more about our social media hints and tips here.

Saving People, Hunting Things. The Family Business.

This point is particularly relevant to smaller businesses. You might be the social media champion of your company, but that doesn’t mean you have to go it alone. Social media is a great way to network with people. Is your boss heading off for a meeting? Get them to take a quick selfie and send out a tweet about the meeting. We’re not asking you to disclose your top secrets, but a quick hello or thanks won’t hurt!

Carry On My Wayward Son…

It can be a tough slog devising your social media strategy, you just need to work out what you want from social media and how to give your followers an insight into who you are. Good content means everything, it lets your followers know that you take an interest in what you are posting.

There’ll Be Peace When You Are Done.

Okay, this one is a little bit of a lie. If you think your social media strategy is perfect, then you're not doing it right. You might find a solution that works well for you for a while, but social media never sleeps. There are always changes to implement and new features to have fun with. Stick with the one social media strategy and pretty soon people will get bored. So there you have it! Supernatural teaches us not only to carry salt everywhere, but that you can find hints and tips for your social media channels in the most unlikely place. So remember, family don't end with blood - get out there and get networking!
