Web Design - The Sites That Time Forgot
The internet. The World Wide Web. The Information Super Highway. It’s had a lot of names since it’s inception back in the U.S. Defense Department's Advanced Research Projects Agency Network in the 60’s.It took a while but in 1990, Tim Berners-Lee a CERN scientist made a breakthrough and developed HyperText Markup Language (HTML) and the ability to create websites was born.
Fast forward to the mid-nineties and the internet is fully open for business with large communities beginning to gather on information boards and chat rooms beginning to take shape (A/S/L anyone?).
While the internet has made massive leaps forward with on-demand streaming, multiplayer gaming and social media platforms; some websites have stood frozen in time like Brendan Fraser in California Man.
Below is a list of sites which have not changed in over 20 years
Space Jam
Space Jam was released in 1996. It was awesome. Michael Jordan led the plucky Looney Tunes to a win against the MonStars! It was a childhood shaping movie. But the website has NOT changed at all in over 22 years. It’s the ultimate testament to mid-nineties web design. Check out the classic repeated background pattern, the hard to read text colours. The strange navigation. It’s all there!
CNN’s OJ Simpson Trial
It was one of the biggest events of the nineties. It spawned the reality TV juggernauts that are the Kardashians and gave rise to one of the greatest lines in courtroom history - “if the glove does not fit, you must acquit”. It is, of course, the OJ Simpson Trial. The website from 1996 is surprisingly easy to navigate and works pretty well on mobile!
Welcome to Netscape
Some of you young scamps might not remember Netscape. It was one of the original internet browsers long before Chrome was a twinkle in Google’s eye. Indeed the ‘Welcome to Netscape’ dates all the way back to 1994 and explains how ‘hyperlinks’ work…we know grampa!
Dole Kemp '96
Before Hillary and Donald were in the running for the top job in the US, Bob Dole squared off against Bill Clinton. We know how that turned out for Bob. He may have lost out on the presidency but his old school website has won our hearts. Check out the ‘online campaign’ in the header…just to make it clear you're on the internet!
Berkshire Hathaway
Technically time never forgot about this website. It’s still updated! This is the digital home of Berkshire Hathaway, Warren Buffet’s $430bn dollar company. He certainly didn’t make his cash from web design. The site was created in 1996 and has stayed true to its roots since then. Resolutely saying no to any updates in design or technology. We kind of love it.
Hit us up to make sure your website stays up-to-date, stands the test of time and isn’t forgotten. Web design is kind of our thing.
